Why Photographers won't share their RAW files?

If you have worked with photographers before you might have come across with a situation where you ask them to share their RAW files as well and they have refused to share them with you. Commercial photographers typically don't share their RAW files with clients (brands) for several reasons:

Professionalism and Brand Consistency: Commercial photographers are hired for their expertise in capturing images that align with a brand's identity and message. Sharing RAW files might lead to inconsistent post-processing and potentially compromise the photographer's professional reputation if the client makes edits that deviate from the intended style.

Creative Control: Like any artist, photographers want to maintain control over the final product. RAW files provide a significant amount of data and flexibility for post-processing, and photographers use this control to ensure the images meet their artistic and professional standards.

Protecting Intellectual Property: RAW files contain unprocessed data straight from the camera sensor, and they are essentially the photographer's intellectual property. By sharing RAW files, photographers risk having their work modified or used in ways that were not agreed upon in the initial contract. In simpler terms giving out RAW files is like selling someone a house with a monthly rent's price. See more about intellectual property, Copyright and User Licence HERE.

Quality Assurance: Photographers take pride in delivering high-quality images to their clients. Sharing RAW files could result in the client accessing unedited or unfinished work, potentially leading to misunderstandings about the photographer's capabilities and the final product's quality.

Technical Expertise: RAW files are camera-specific and require specialized software and technical knowledge to process effectively. Clients may not have the necessary skills or software to handle RAW files properly, leading to potential issues with color balance, exposure, or other technical aspects of the images.

Contractual Agreements: The terms of the photography contract often specify the deliverables, which typically include fully processed and edited images. Providing RAW files may not be part of the agreed-upon terms, and photographers may charge extra if the client specifically requests access to the RAW files.

In commercial photography, the final, edited images are considered the deliverables, and clients trust the photographer's expertise to provide a polished and professional result. While clients may have specific preferences or requests, the workflow typically involves delivering high-quality, processed images rather than the raw, unedited files.
